Paper cutting dates back to 4th Century China; however, Swiss and German immigrants brought the art of paper cutting to America during the 17th Century. The Germans called it Scherenschnitte or “Scissor Cuts.” At the time, paper was a costly commodity, so Scherenschnitte usually decorated important documents such as birth and marriage certificates. The tradition has also served for love letters, portraits, and Christmas decorations.
